A couple that has spent many years volunteering to support cancer fundraisers is now finding themselves on the flip side.

A benefit is planned for noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Moose Lodge, 208 Main St. S, to support Dave and Keri Yerhart’s medical expenses as Dave continues battling stage three cancer.

Dave was diagnosed last November with hypothyroidism and a recurrent brain tumor, which doctors say is malignant and non-operable. He’s been receiving chemotherapy and other treatments since then.

The Yerharts have been involved with Lyle Area Cancer for about nine years, and they live a few miles north of Lyle. Thecouple, who owns Y Waste, runs Cans for Cancer, which collects recycled cans in a few locations in Austin and Lyle and then gives the proceeds from reselling the cans to LAC.

“They like to give to the community, they’re very caring people,” said Keri’s brother, Chad Johnson, who is helping plan the event.

The event will feature a meal, a live auction and a silent auction. The meal will be for a freewill donation and will feature pork sandwiches, potato salad, macaroni salad and chips.

Organizers already have hundreds of auction items, including several sports items: two Minnesota Wild photos signed by Christian Folin and Marco Scandella, a Minnesota Twins signed team ball, Captain Munnerlyn autograph, two sets of Minnesota Wild tickets, several items from the Austin Bruins and a Dale Earnhardt jacket.

Other items include: a recliner, an LED TV, 18 holes for four at the Austin Country Club with golf carts, golf for two at Meadow Greens and many other items.

Johnson said it’s been an eye-opening experience for the family to see all the support they’ve received. Keri told her brother that it’s opened her eyes up in a new way to the benefits of what she and Dave have been doing all these years, Johnson said.

While it’s been gratifying to help others through cancer fundraisers and events over the year, Johnson said the couple has been touched by the help received.

“It’s a good feeling to be able to help support them,” he said.
