Teen taken into custody for gun; 17-year-old had gun in backpack, but said he didn’t take it to school

Austin police responded to a call at an Oakland Avenue East residence at 4:13 p.m. on Monday of a handgun found in a backpack.
The .22 caliber handgun was found in the backpack of a 17-year-old male who lived at the residence, according to Police Chief Brian Kreuger. The gun was loaded with a seven round magazine.
The teen was staying with a family member who found the gun. The family member drove to his residence at the 1700 block of Oakland Avenue East and called the police.
The teen denied taking the handgun to school.
The teen was taken to Many Rivers Juvenile Detention Center in Rochester and is facing a possible charge of felony ineligible possession of a handgun
