Raiders take down Packer softball team

The Austin softball team showed a little wear and tear from a busy schedule as it lost 12-1 to Northfield in Todd Park Thursday.
The Packers (1-4 overall, 0-3 Big Nine) played nine scrimmages before the season and Thursday’s game was their third contest in four days. Austin was within 7-0 after six innings, but the Raiders (1-0 overall) plated five unearned runs against Austin’s reserves to really break things open.
Hannah Ramussen has pitched every game this season for the short-staffed Packers.
“We’re just getting worn out. We need to rest,” Austin head coach Al Eckmann said. “Hannah’s been hurting and we’ve had some pitchers missing. We went with what we had today. Hannah’s been doing a real good job. She’s been working hard and her back’s been sore, but she gutted it out.”
Halie Retterath had the lone RBI in the loss for the Packers when she singled in Cally Heiny in the seventh inning. The Raiders (1-0 overall, 1-0 Big Nine) took a 4-0 lead in the third when Jillian Noel hit a three-run homer to left field.
Eckmann said his team needs to get some rest and the coaches are also still seeing who should play where.
“We’re still not sure we’ve got the right people in the right places and we’re moving people around,” Eckmann said. “They’re getting better.”
