Law enforcement recovered the body of a 55-year-old man from Mill Pond behind Austin Public Library in view of a heavily used recreational trail Wednesday morning.
According to Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger, the Austin Police Department and Austin Fire Department responded to a call at 8:02 a.m. from someone who was on the trail behind the library. Emergency responders called for a boat to help retrieve the body, which was about 30 feet from the shore behind the library.
It’s unclear how long the body had been in the water.
Police cordoned off the trail, which runs between the library and Mill Pond, but many walkers and runners stopped to watch the scene unfold with some features of the body visible.
More than a dozen emergency responders were on scene.
After investigating the scene, taking photos and collecting evidence, emergency responders in wet suits took the boat onto the water and removed the body from the water by 9:40 a.m.
Krueger said the body will be taken to Rochester for an autopsy.
