An Austin man who allegedly threw objects at a woman during an argument was charged in Mower County District Court on Tuesday.

Dean Allan Vatnsdal, 34, was charged with two counts of felony domestic assault and misdemeanor open bottle.

According to the court report, police responded to a domestic disturbance call in the 500 block of Seventh Street Northeast. An officer found Vatnsdal in a vehicle a block away from the residence.

A woman outside the residence told police she and a friend wanted to go to a casino, but Vatnsdal did not want them to go. She said he would not let her get dressed and took her purse, identification card and EBT card. She tried to take her purse back, but Vatnsdal threw objects at her, some of which struck her. He then sprayed her clothes with cologne to ruin the garments and left the home with her property. She expressed fear of Vatnsdal and said he had been “drinking all day.”

Her friend backed her story. The officer also viewed a video supporting the story.

Vatnsdal was arrested and claimed he did not throw anything at the woman. Police retrieved her EBT card, but did not find her identification card. Police also located an open bottle of vodka in the front passenger seat of Vatnsdal’s vehicle.

Vatnsdal has prior convictions of violating of a domestic abuse no contact order and domestic assault.  Both incidents involved the same woman.

Vatnsdal is scheduled to appear in court again on Aug. 31.
