Mass school registration for Austin public is Aug. 9, 10; Function designed as ‘one-stop shop’ for families

Mass registration for the 2017-2018 school year at Austin Public Schools will be held Wednesday, Aug. 9, and Thursday, Aug. 10 at Austin High School.

Traditional calendar students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade will be registered, and all registration will take place in the high school gyms. Elementary students and their families will register in the Hastings Gym; families of I.J. Holton Intermediate School and Ellis Middle School students will register in the Packer Gym; and high school families will register in the Ove Berven gym.

Corey Haugen, director of research, evaluation and assessment for the school district, said the days are designed to be a “one-stop shop” for families whose students will not only be registered for classes, but will also turn in a number of other forms necessary to start school.

Those include family/student information, computer acceptable use, health plans, food service benefits, picture packets, and more. He noted last year’s registration brought out over 90 percent of the almost-5,000 students and their families.

Families of students currently enrolled in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade should have received a mailing during the week of July 24-28.

Those completed forms should  be brought to the registration.

“We want to make this as easy as we can for our families,” said Haugen. “Those who cannot attend at their designated time may come at one of the other times if it is necessary.”

The sessions will also provide access to youth activity organizations and agencies. Some of them are Austin Park and Recreation, MacPhail Music, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, the YMCA, Head Start , and Austin Positive Action Coalition. Also on hand will be representatives from Mayo Clinic Health System-Austin, who will  provide flu shots.

Applications may also be received for free and reduced lunches. Students’ photos will be taken during this time, Haugen said.

Students on the 45-15, or year-round schedule, began classes for the new year last week.

Haugen said parents with new students to enroll, of who have questions, should contact the APS Enrollment Office at 507-460-1937 or visit the district website www.austin.k12.mn.us/enrollment office.
