A teen was arrested for allegedly stealing a pickup from the Austin Armory Thursday night, and running from a police officer.

According to Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger, an Austin K-9 officer was on patrol when he saw a pickup fishtail after turning a corner at a high rate of speed at 11:43 p.m.

The officer stopped the truck in the 800 block of Ninth Avenue Southeast when the driver exited the vehicle and ran toward the railroad tracks.

The officer told the driver to stop or he would release the dog. The driver stopped and was taken into custody without incident.

The officer asked the driver, a 15-year-old boy, if the truck was stolen, to which he allegedly replied “yes.” The officer found a toy snub-nosed handgun in the teen’s waistband.

The truck’s registered owner was at Camp Ripley for military exercises.

Police confirmed the truck was stolen from the Austin Armory.

The teen was taken to the Olmsted County Juvenile Detention Center. The police report was forwarded to the Mower County Attorney’s office for further action. The teen could be facing potential charges of felony theft of a vehicle, fleeing a peace officer by means other than a vehicle, careless driving, driving without a valid license and possession of tobacco.
