SAVAGE — The No. 3 seeded Austin boys soccer team kept their magical run alive when they overcame a late setback to beat Bemidji 3-2 in overtime in the Minnesota State Class A State Boys State Soccer Tournament quarterfinals at Prior Lake High School Tuesday.
The Lumberjacks (16-3-2 overall) tied the game at 2-2 when John Chadwick scored on a pass from a free kick with 7:11 left in regulation, but Austin won the game when Lonyjera Okal blasted a 27-yard free kick off the hands of Bemidji keeper Jedidiah Bitter to end the game.
“We’ve been down before against quality opponents. We had confidence to keep cracking away and that’s what it was,” said Austin head coach Jens Levisen. “We didn’t focus on what caused the overtime, we just looked it as ten minutes to get the golden goal and we wanted to keep on creating those opportunities.”
Okal tied the game up at 1-1 when he hit a 25-yard free kick with 34:46 left in the second half and Mooday Wah gave the Packers a 2-1 lead when he scored just 44 seconds after Okal’s first goal.
Austin junior Victor Velazquez said he had complete faith in Okal at the end of the game with the season on the line.
“I knew if LJ was going to take it, I had 100 percent confidence that he was going to make it,” Velazquez said. “When it went in, I was speechless. We’re moving on and we’re playing in US Bank Stadium. This is what we dreamed of. It couldn’t be any better.”
The Packers will now play in the Class A semifinals at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis at 2 p.m. Monday.
