Spring Valley man sentenced in Grand Meadow assault

Otha Vontrell Dunbar, 37, of Spring Valley, Minnesota, was sentenced Thursday in Mower County District Court to five years of probation after pleading guilty June 19 to one count of felony domestic assault as part of a plea agreement.
Judge Christa Daily sentenced Dunbar to a five-year stay of a 21-month prison term. He is scheduled to be on probation until Oct. 26, 2022, has nearly 30 conditions to follow including no alcohol or controlled substance use. He can’t be where alcohol is primarily served, including house parties. He also can’t have guns, vote, make threats or harass.
Daily also ordered 125 hours of community work service.
Dunbar was arrested after a sheriff’s deputy and a Grand Meadow police officer were dispatched to a report of a domestic assault in Grand Meadow. According to the criminal complaint, an intoxicated Dunbar threatened his girlfriend after she declined in the early morning hours of Feb. 4 to give him a ride to Spring Valley and he punched her 13-year-old son in the face when he investigated the commotion.
He was charged with two counts of felony domestic assault. Each count carried a possible maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Dunbar was convicted in 2012 and 2015 for domestic assault, according to court documents.
