Six people were taken to Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin Saturday night after a vehicle struck an embankment near the Mower County border.
Daniel Steven Nelson, 17, of Austin was taken to the hospital with cuts to his face and a swollen left eye.
Five other juveniles who were in the vehicle were taken to the hospital, including a boy who had a swollen eye and possible broken bones in his right and left arms.
Another person had a cut underneath a right eye.
Their names were not available as of press time.
Nelson was driving a Chevy Silverado west on 195th Street when a deer ran onto the road, according to the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office. Nelson reportedly swerved to miss the deer, entering the ditch. He tried to re-enter the road but was not able to, entering a drainage ditch and striking an embankment head-on.
The crash was reported to the Sheriff’s Office at about 8 p.m. Saturday.
Nelson was the only occupant of the vehicle who was wearing a seat belt, and alcohol was not a factor in the crash, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
