Auditions open for Rochester Civic Theatre presentation of ‘August: Osage County’

The Rochester Civic Theatre Company will hold open auditions for its June production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “August: Osage County,” on Feb 5 and 7.

The Civic’s production of “August: Osage County” will run from June 8-17.

“August: Osage County” is a play by Tracy Letts. It was the recipient of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The play is set on the plains of modern day, middle-class Oklahoma. The Weston family members are all intelligent, sensitive creatures who have the uncanny ability of making each other absolutely miserable.

When the patriarch of the household mysteriously vanishes, the Weston clan gathers together to simultaneously support and attack one another.

Roles available

The Weston Family

•Beverly Weston: 60s- the patriarch and an alcoholic poet who has decided to give up on life.

•Violet Weston: sixties, his wife. A viper who is addicted to pain killers and is suffering from mouth cancer. She is capable of great cruelty disguised as truth telling. She alternates from giving up on life in a fog of pills to crystal clear clarity of purpose- to push everyone away from her.

•Barbara Fordham: 40s, the oldest daughter. A fighter, whose husband has now left her for a much younger woman. She is trying to understand what is left of her life, having thought she’d beat the odds.

•Bill Fordham: 40s, her husband. A mildly successful poet and academic struggling with not being a cliché of a mid-life crisis.

•Jean Fordham: mid teens, their daughter. trapped by parents that are divorcing, yearning to self-destruct.

•Ivy Weston: 40s, the middle daughter. Unmarried. Has never left the County. May have finally found the love that has long since avoided her but afraid to tell the others that it is Little Charles.

•Karen Weston: the youngest and just turned forty and recently engaged. She has wandered for years trying to understand why success is never around the corner.

•Mattie Fay Aiken: late 50s, Violet’s younger sister- full of self-doubt covered by a raucous sense of humor. She is covering a secret affair and the betrayal that has haunted her for years.

•Charlie AIken: Her husband, early 60s. A good man who has tried to always be kind and fair.

•Little Charles: their son, late thirties. Always felt like he was not good enough. And often told so by his mother. Secretly in love now with Ivy and very happy for the first time in his life.

Other Roles

•Johnna Monevata: 20s, the newly hired housekeeper for the Westons. A Native American, proud, quiet, protective, and very hard working.

•Steve Heidebrecht: late 40s, early 50s, Karen’s fiancé, married three time previously, and a true narcissist.

•Sheriff Deon Gilbeau: Same age as •Barbara: 40s— a very good lawman, who has always felt something for Barbara. Born and raised and has lived in Osage, County his whole life.
