Foundation/mechanical and plumbing contract approved for pool slides

The Austin Municipal Pool came one step closer to getting new slides Monday evening.

The Austin City Council voted 6-0 in favor of awarding Global Specialty Contractors, Inc. a contract to do foundation/mechanical and plumbing work for the new slides during its regular meeting Monday evening, Councilwoman Judy Enright was absent from the meeting.

USAquatics, Signature Aquatics, whom Austin Park and Recreation Director Kim Underwood said is the “design, bidding and project team” for the slides, received bids from Global Specialty Contractors, Inc. and Michael Murphy Construction LLC.

The complete bid from Global Specialty Contractors, Inc. came to a total of $133,400. The bid from Michael Murphy Construction LLC for $120,755; however, the bid did not include mechanical or plumbing pads. There would also be an additional charge of $45,000 for deck posts and $16,000 for a ground-thaw unit and blanket.

Paul Schaffer of Signature Aquatics recommended the bid from Global Specialty Contractors, Inc. The Park Board agreed with Schaffer and recommended the council enter into a contract with Global Specialty Contractors, Inc. during their meeting on Feb. 7.

Fox Electric will do electrical work on the slides at a cost of $7,990.

Plans for the slides will have to be approved by the State of Minnesota before any work can begin.
