Darrell James Wigham, 29, of Austin was charged on Tuesday in Mower County District Court with felony theft of a motor vehicle, felony theft of movable property and gross misdemeanor possession of stolen property.
According to the court complaint, police were called at 3:02 a.m. on Saturday regarding the theft of a 2009 Pontiac G6 from a residence in the 300 block of 11th Avenue Southwest. Officers met with a man, who owned the stolen vehicle, and a woman at a residence in the 400 block of Second Street Southeast.
The man told police that Wigham lived with him at the 11th Avenue address. He allegedly claimed Wigham had been acting erratically and that he had found a modified light bulb used for smoking methamphetamine in the house.
The man said he noticed his car, which he valued at $8,995, and two cell phones, valued at $900 each, were gone and he believed Wigham stole them, according to the complaint. The woman told police Wigham was allegedly sending her “mean, rude and sexual” text messages from one of the cell phones.
An officer found the vehicle in the parking lot of the Meadows West Apartments, where Wigham was arrested, according to the complaint. An officer arrived at the car owner’s residence with property that was allegedly found in Wigham’s possession, including one of the man’s cell phones, as well as a credit card, an EBT card, and a key fob for a 2014 Chevrolet Malibu that belonged to the man’s girlfriend. The girlfriend told police the credit card, EBT card and key fob had been stolen from her car.
A review of Wigham’s criminal history shows prior convictions for theft, burglary, check forgery, disorderly conduct and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Wigham will appear in court again on Feb. 26.
