Snow, then crashes; Icy pavement contributes to injuries at Hwy. 218 ramps

Bad weather contributed to two crashes with injuries on Monday afternoon on and near the Interstate 90 ramps of Highway 218.
According to a Minnesota State Patrol report, the first crash occurred at 1:40 p.m. on Monday at the Highway 218 north ramp of Interstate 90 West. A 2001 Mercury Sable was heading westbound on Interstate 90 when it took the off ramp to Highway 218 North, lost control and struck a culvert marker and a light pole. The driver, 40 year-old Srinivasa R. Reddy of Austin, was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin.
The second crash occurred at 2:29 p.m. on Monday on Interstate 90 East at the Highway 218 South ramp, according to the State Patrol report. A 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe went off the road to the left, struck a reflective pole and rolled, landing on its roof. Gold Cross Ambulance Service transported the driver, 50 year-old Ganta Henderson of Austin, to Mower County Health System in Austin for non-life threatening injuries.
The Mower County Sheriff’s Office responded to both scenes.
The State Patrol noted snow and ice when reporting the road conditions at both incidents.
Both divers were wearing their seatbelts, according to the report.
During the period of both crashes, light snow was falling in the Austin area, according to National Weather Service records. Visibility ranged from 1 mile around 1:40 p.m. to 2 miles at about 2:30 p.m.
Blowing snow is expected throughout today.
