Alice Jeannette (Thompson) Tomhave, 100, went home to glory on March 16, 2018.
Alice was born on Dec. 31, 1917, to Thaddeus Steven and Henrietta Jane (Diddams) Thompson as the youngest of four sisters. She was a lifelong resident of Austin, Minnesota. She was a very active student, participating in class government, the yearbook and girl’s athletics. She graduated from Austin High School in 1935. On June 9, 1940, she married Walter Tomhave. Together they raised two sons, Charles and William.
Alice worked in the office at the Hormel Company before her marriage and again during the war years. She returned to the work force in the early 1960s, first as an office administrator with a local insurance office and then as an account clerk at Austin Community College for over 20 years.
Alice loved sports. She was a golfer and bowler. She and her husband faithfully followed Austin Packer football long after their sons had finished high school. She was a fiercely loyal fan of both the Vikings and the Twins, but could be equally supportive of Walt’s bowling team or the church’s softball team.
Alice was a very giving person. Over the years, she hosted many visiting speakers, missionaries and groups in her home. She was always willing to provide food for church gatherings and she spent countless hours working behind the scenes at those events. Unable to be a blood donor herself, she donated hundreds of hours as a typist during Red Cross blood drives in the community.
Alice loved her Lord and Savior. She accepted Christ as her Savior when she was a child and attended First Baptist Church until she was no longer able. Even though Walt was the singer in the family, she loved to hear and sing the familiar hymns. During her last years, she would comfort herself by singing “Jesus is the Sweetest Name I Know.”
She is survived by two sons, Charles (Judy) Tomhave of Green Valley, Arizona, and William (Lois) Tomhave of Moorhead, Minnesota; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of over 73 years, Walt; and three sisters, Lucille Thompson, Eliza Maston and Emily (Henry) Hansen.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation and thanks to the staff at St. Marks Living Center and Heartland Hospice for their care and compassion during Alice’s lengthy convalescence.
Alice’s funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on April 3, 2018, at Grace Baptist Church, Austin. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
