Aldean Charles Newman, 33, of St. Cloud was charged on Thursday in Mower County District Court with felony theft.

According to the court complaint, an Austin police officer was called on Oct. 19 regarding a theft that occurred at 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 14 at Walmart. A member of the store’s asset protection team said that a male suspect allegedly pushed a cart full of merchandise out an emergency door in the lawn and garden department, then went north across 21st Avenue Northwest, near 10th Street Northwest, and hid the items out of view of security cameras.

He then said the suspect drove his car to the stolen goods, loaded them into the car and drove away at about 1:45 a.m. The only item he could identify was an Omen desktop computer, valued at $1,399.

The officer was provided with surveillance footage and photographs, according to the report. The asset protection manager at the Rochester North Walmart, who had previously dealt with Newman in similar thefts from the Rochester North and South locations, allegedly identified him from the surveillance.

A review of Newman’s criminal history shows prior convictions for disorderly conduct, trespassing, marijuana possession, domestic assault, theft, possession of burglary tools and possession of a firearm or ammunition by an ineligible person.

Newman will appear in court again on Monday.
