Lawrence Ferdinand “Jake” Neubert, 92, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 8, 2018, at Our House Senior Living in Austin.

Jake was born on May 30, 1925, in Mankato, Minnesota, to Jacob and Stella (McHugh) Neubert. He graduated from Loyola Catholic High School in Mankato in 1943. As part of his military training, he attended one year at Miami of Ohio University in Oxford, Ohio. After the war, Jake earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Mankato State Teachers College and later his masters degree from North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota.

Jake was a World War II combat veteran in the U.S. Navy, serving in South Pacific battles at Midway, Saipan and Okinawa. He was an accomplished athlete, particularly in football. He was the starting fullback and linebacker on seven conference championship teams, three at Loyola, one at Miami of Ohio and three at Mankato Teachers College.

He had a long and distinguished 36-year career as an educator and administrator in Wales, North Dakota, Browns Valley, Minnesota, and Lake City, Minnesota. He also coached basketball, football and track.

Jake was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Catherine (Erlandson) Neubert; parents; grandson, Bradley Stenberg; and brothers, Ken and Ray Neubert.

He is survived by six children, Daniel (Judy) Neubert, Robbinsdale, Minnesota, Nancy (Dean) Stenberg, Troup, Texas, Matthew (Patti Pritzl) Neubert, Phoenix, Arizona, Lauri (Mike Arturi) Neubert, Red Wing, Minnesota, Shelly (Mike) Bouquet, Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and Wendy (Randy) Kramer, Austin; six grandchildren, Matthew (Marisa) Neubert, Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, Brent Stenberg, Tyler, Texas, Jacob and Brady Kramer, Austin, and Emily and Mike Arturi, Chicago, Illinois; great-granddaughter, Stella Neubert; and siblings, Jim Neubert, Paul Neubert and Shirley Westphal.

Private services and interment will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Memorials may be directed to Our House Senior Living, 204 14th St. NW, Austin, MN 55912, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
