Lyle-Pacelli girls shoot their way past Superlarks

ROCHESTER – When Lyle-Pacelli junior Abby Bollingberg needs to get out of a shooting slump, she knows exactly where to turn to — her teammates. That encouragement went a long way for Bollingberg as she hit four first half three-pointers to catapult the top-seeded Athletics to a 60-37 win over No. 4 Grand Meadow in a Section 1A semifinal game in Mayo Civic Center Saturday.

Bollingberg finished with 14 points in the win.

“I haven’t been shooting well and I know that I haven’t really thought my shots were going in, but even if I my last five shots they’re unbelievable and they’re telling me that my shots are going in,” Bollingberg said.

GM (23-6 overall) pulled to within 12-10 when Jordyn Glynn converted a lay-up with 11:15 left in the first half, but LP (28-1 overall) answered with a 13-0 run that was capped by back-to-back threes from Lucy Nelson and Bollingberg.

LP senior Kristi Fett was coming off a game where she had a program record 41 points, but she became a passer against the Superlarks. Fett finished with 21 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three blocks while LP connected on seven three-pointers in the win.

“I knew they were going to double- and triple-team me and I knew we’d get a lot of open shots,” Fett said. “They were knocking them down in practice.”

LP is now one win away from the Class A Girls Basketball State Tournament, the closest it has been since it took fourth in state in 2015. LP will play in the Section title game against Hayfield at 6 p.m. in Mayo Civic Center Friday.

LP head coach Justin Morris was glad his team was able to shake off the ghosts of playoffs past as LP had lost the Section 1A West title game to Goodhue in the past two seasons.

“We had two heartbreakers in a row. We felt like we could’ve beaten Goodhue in the last two years and they went on to win the state championship both times,” Morris said. “This team is special. They’re so tough, they’re so committed to each other and they’re so mentally tough. They’re different from any other team we’ve had.”

Glynn had 11 points and five rebounds to lead GM, which will bring back most of its roster next season.

GM head coach Ryan Queensland said his team made big strides this season.

“I think they picked up a little more hunger,” Queensland said. “It was fun to watch us through the year being a little bit mentally and physically stronger. I think now with them being so close, yet so far away they’re a little more hungry.”
