Steven Antonio Edwards, 26, of Austin was charged on Monday in Mower County District Court with two counts of felony fifth-degree drug possession, felony fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle, gross misdemeanor third-degree DWI and misdemeanor driving after revocation of his license.
According to Austin Police Capt. David McKichan, an officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop at 10:30 p.m. Saturday on a 2002 tan Oldsmobile Bravada with a broken taillight and expired registration in the 200 block of First Avenue Southwest. The officer also allegedly observed the vehicle weaving over the fog line. The driver of the vehicle, Edwards, allegedly fled when the officer tried to stop him.
The ensuing chase reached speeds of 45 miles per hour through the downtown, according to McKichan. Edwards allegedly exited the vehicle in the 800 block of Fifth Avenue Northeast and ran. He was caught two blocks away when an officer subdued him with a Taser.
Police found three bags suspected of containing cocaine and ecstasy, according to McKichan; one was allegedly found on Edwards, one on the vehicle’s running board and one on the path of the foot chase.
A review of Edwards’ criminal history shows prior convictions for theft, giving a peace officer a false name, disorderly conduct, intentional damage to property, DWI and drug possession.
Edwards will appear in court again on March 26.
