Peter Okan, 62, of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at Elmore Assisted Living in Elmore, Minnesota.

He was born May 2, 1955, in Akobo, South Sudan, to Okan and Odol Adonyo. Peter grew up in Akobo and attended the Comboni Primary School in Khartoum, Sudan, beginning in 1965, the Addis Ababa School for refugees in 1967, and the Yambio Agricultural Institute in 1978. From 1980-88, Peter attended Rumbek Secondary School and the Shambat Agricultural College in Khartoum. His work experience included jobs as a public service officer for the Southern Regional Government in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, and then as an administrative officer for the local government in the Upper Nile Region of Malakal. In 1992, Peter began traveling from Egypt to the United States, and then moved to the U.S. in 2002. He settled in Austin in 2004, working as an interpreter for Mower County. A member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, Peter was an enthusiastic supporter of his community. He enjoyed walking and traveling. His friends and family will miss him dearly.

Survivors include his nieces, Hana Ochalla and Ariet James of Waite Park, Minnesota; his siblings, James Okan of Ethiopia, Abulla Okan,  Onyango Okan and Ajwieo Okan, all of South Sudan; many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Omot Okan.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 16, 2018, at the East Building of Faith Evangelical Free Church Campus, 1805 12th St. SW, Austin, MN 55912. Visitation will be from 1:30-2:30 p.m. preceding the service. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the family.
