Southland teams earn machine design awards

Adviser Paula Mortenson brought two teams from Southland School that earned awards in the Minnesota State Engineering Center of Excellence’s 2018 Engineering Machine Design Contest held on March 2, at Minnesota State University, Mankato’s campus.

Southland’s Check Up team of Alex Kiefer, Ivy Riddles, Lily Riddles, McKendry Kennedy, Bret Mathews, Jacob Schmitz and Thomas Shaw took third place.

The Morty Mart team of Ike Eissinger, Max Bauer, Nick Mensink, Brianna Johnson, Lo Fernandes Vilas Boas and Garret Mullenbach took home “Everything But the Kitchen Sink” and fifth place awards.

Student teams were challenged to enter a machine they engineered to complete a specific task, engaging hands-on with engineering and STEM principles.

The mission was to construct a machine that used multiple steps to complete an assigned task, which varies from year to year.
