Dorran V. Rickert, 65, of Austin, Minnesota, died at his home on Saturday, April 7, 2018.
Dorran Vernon Rickert was born July 14, 1952, in Glencoe, Minnesota, the son of Vernon and Lucille (Lucas) Rickert. He was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Brownton, Minnesota, and graduated from Brownton High School in 1970. He attended Willmar Community College and Marshall State University, where he received his teaching degree for K-6. He student taught for one year in Woodlake, Minnesota, and then received a job at Southgate Elementary School in Austin. Dorran continued his education, receiving his masters degree from St. Cloud State University. He retired from teaching at Southgate Elementary in the spring of 2017.
Dorran was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, the Teachers Association, Senior Card Club and an avid volunteer, working whenever he was asked. He loved his church, family, friends, spending time on the farm where he grew up and playing cards, but his passion was teaching and tutoring kids whenever he could. He enjoyed watching Austin High School sports and found it was a way to stay connected with many of the kids he had taught. He liked to keep in touch with his many family and friends. Dorran was preceded in death by his father, Vernon Rickert; grandparents; and many aunts and uncles.
He is survived by his mother, Lucille Lucas Rickert, Brownton; brother, Kerry Rickert, Brownton; sister and brother-in-law, Ranaye and Randy Baumgarten, Becker, Minnesota; nephews, Nate Baumgarten, Becker, Cody Baumgarten, Brainerd, Minnesota, and Caleb Baumgarten, Plymouth, Minnesota; niece, Cassie Baumgarten, College Station, Texas; aunts and uncle, Jan and Chuck Draeger, Hutchinson, Minnesota, and Rose Ehrenberg, Buffalo, Minnesota.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 13, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mark Niethammer officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and for one hour before the service on Friday at the church. Interment will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Brownton. Memorials are preferred to the Austin Area Education Foundation.
