Northfield edges out Packer boys tennis

The Austin boys tennis team was in a lot of matches, but it couldn’t get the win as it lost to Northfield 6-1 in Paulson Tennis Courts Tuesday.

The Packers (1-4 overall, 1-4 Big Nine) lost three of the matches in three sets as they weren’t able to pull off the close ones.

All of the doubles played well and with a few key points here and there could have turn the outcome around,” Austin head coach Jeff Anderson said. “Josh Brehmer continues to play really well. I am looking forward to a few days of practice so we can work on some things that we have seen during our matches over the past week.”

Brehmer has won four of his five matches to start the season at No. 2 singles and he beat Griffin Rod of Northfield by scores of 6-2, 6-0.

Brehmer and the Packers have had to adjust to playing five matches in five days after nearly a month of indoor practices, where they weren’t able to work a lot on tennis.

It’s been real difficult so far,” Brehmer said. “We’ve had more matches than outdoor practices, but we’ve been making it work. Today I just played how I normally do. I tried to keep the other guy off-balanced and force him to use his back hand more than he would want to.”

While the season is sure to be a grind with a lot of matches jammed into a short period of time, Brehmer is glad to be outside playing instead of inside practicing.

“Endurance will come into play and people will get a little bit tired, but we’re up for it,” Brehmer said. “We know that we have to keep playing and the season goes by fast. We’re excited. We want to be out here and playing.”
