Jenny Guadalupe Gutierrez, 23, of Mitchellville, Iowa, was sentenced on Thursday in Mower County District Court to 15 months in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Shakopee for felony theft by check. She received credit for 287 days served.
She pleaded guilty to the charge on March 16 as part of a plea agreement.
Judge Jeffrey Kritzer issued the sentence.
Gutierrez was arrested in August after writing bad checks to several area businesses dating back to April 17. They were:
• Two checks for the amounts of $212.40 and $70.94, dated April 17 and 18 respectively, written to K&H Classic Stop in LeRoy from a closed account;
• One check for the amount of $271.04 dated June 9, written to Knauer’s Market in Austin;
• Two checks for the amounts of $1,450.60 and $1,883.35, both dated June 12, written to Brick Furniture in Austin on a Wells Fargo account;
• One check for the amount of $104.08, dated June 14, written to Flippin Furniture in Austin from a closed account; and
• One check for the amount of $608.75, dated June 20, written to Holiday Ford in Austin for car repairs.
When shown a picture of Gutierrez by law enforcement, several employees from the businesses identified her as the person who wrote the bad checks.
A review of Gutierrez’s criminal record shows prior convictions for theft, check forgery, offering forged checks and issuing dishonored checks.
