The Austin baseball team shook off a tough showing in a 7-1 loss in the first game of a doubleheader against Rochester Century.

The Packers rebounded to take the nightcap 9-4 at Seltz Field Friday.

The Packers (11-5 overall) came out and scored five runs in the first inning of the second game after having just three hits in the opener. AJ Mueller, Josi Both and Ross Young each had one RBI in that frame and Hunter Guyette knocked in two runs.

“In the first game we kind of got down on ourselves,” Guyette said. “It’s baseball and it’s a game of mistakes and averages, but the best thing a situation like that is to re-gather as a team and don’t worry about the last one. It’s a team sport for a reason and everyone’s got to pick each other up.”

Jack Dankert struck out five as he allowed just one run in five innings  to pick up the win in the nightcap for Austin. The Packer bats also woke up, racking up eight hits.

“A big thing that we did was we sat back on the ball. We readjusted for the second game and we thought about the little things we needed to take care of,” Guyette said. “We were kind of getting ahead of ourselves [in the first game]. We have a tendency as a team where we all want to get big hits. We were just flying open and not staying back on those change ups and fast balls. A big thing for us is to stay closed and back on the ball.

Century broke a 1-1 tie of the third inning of the first game when it piled on five runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Panthers put up four straight hits to push the lead from 2-1 to 6-1 after a two-out throwing error by the Packers.

Austin will close out the regular season at Albert Lea Monday and then the team will turn its focus to the postseason.

“We’ve just got to get mentally prepared and we’ve got to work on trying not too do much at the plate,” Mueller said.
