Best Bets: Let the gaming begin

Break out the dice, dust off your gaming figurines and build your customizable card game decks because Austi-Con is returning to the Austin National Guard Armory this weekend.
Founded and hosted by local gaming enthusiast Michael Jordal, Austi-Con is now in its third year. Last year’s event drew over 200 people.
Austi-Con III will run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Austin National Guard Armory. Admission is $15 for the entire weekend; however, a special rate of $10 for a family of four will be available on Sunday. Jordal hopes the special rate will attract more families.
“It’s just a lot of fun,” Jordal said. “There are a lot of people there passionate about the hobby and if you’re not familiar with some of the games, you can learn.”
Jordal said there will be a large variety of table top games for open gaming, from board games to customizable card games, as well as some vendors. Gamers ready to start a game will have “looking for players” signs so visitors will know they are welcome to join the game.
There will also be several opportunities to help raise money for causes. A silent auction and a “Magic: The Gathering” drafting tournament will be held to raise money for Hormel Historic Home autism programs. Over $3,700 has been raised for the programs over the past two years.
Just for Kix Dance Studio will run a concession stand all weekend to help raise money for a trip.

“There are games kids can play with adults,” he said. “It’s a good hobby for everyone.”
“If you’re an experienced gamer, you’ll have a lot of fun,” he added. “If not, you can meet a lot of people and maybe find a game you enjoy.”
