Treat mom to some art fun this Mother’s Day

What does your mom really want for Mother’s Day?

As the mother of two, I speculate that most moms fall into one (or more) of these categories: a mom who wants time with her family, a mom who wants time to herself and a mom who wants chocolate. And wouldn’t you know it, the Austin Area Commission for the Arts has you covered for all three of those!

Spend time with your mom this month at Family Art Studio at 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, May 12. Drop in as a family and get creative with materials provided. It’s free and all ages are encouraged to attend and create together. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Family Art Studio is funded by a grant from the Austin Area Foundation.

Another great way to spend time with your mom is at the Paramount Theatre. We are offering four movies and two concerts in the remaining days of May. Movies are held each Wednesday with both 3 p.m. matinee and 7:30 p.m. evening show. Titles are “Arsenic and Old Lace” (1944) on May 9, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975) on May 16, “McLintock!” (1963) on May 23 and “A Streetcar Named Desire” (1951) on May 30.

If mom loves music, consider attending the Fabulous Vegas Guys at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 19. This  benefit for the Mower County Senior Center features music, comedy and impressions by Donny “Sands” Tersigni and Jonny “Mirage” Bird. Tickets are $15 advance, $18 day of and children 7 and under $7. More music will be heard on Sunday, May 20 at the Paramount at Musical Pathways of Love: Homage to la Danza by pianist Peggy Reich. New-York-based Reich presents an intrinsic parallelism between the traditional European Romantic era of music and its Puerto Rican counterpart: la danza. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 day of.

Does your mom need some “me time?” Get her the gift of creativity with a class at the ArtWorks Center. Upcoming classes include Handbuilding Clay: Tea Pot or Piggy Bank with Emily Wartsbaugh on Thur May 10 at 6 p.m. and An Evening with the Arts with James Wegner: Art of the 60s film and discussion at 6:30 p.m. on Friday May 18. Gift certificates for future classes are also available in any amount.

If your mom likes her “me time” on stage, invite her to the final ArtRocks Open Jam of the spring at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 25. She can share her musical gifts with the house band or practice the art of listening in the audience.

Finally, for a mom in need of chocolate, remember that the ArtWorks Center carries Costa’s chocolates from Owatonna. Get individual truffles, boxes of four, five or 16 and prepare for grateful smiles and hugs.

Nothing sounds quite right for the mother in your life? Consider a gift membership which provides mom with benefits including free popcorn at the Paramount Theatre and discounts on classes and open studio time at the ArtWorks Center. See details at www.austinareaarts.org/membership/.
