Helen P. Broitzman, 92, of Austin, Minnesota, died Tuesday, June 26, 2018, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home.

Helen Pearl was born Feb. 7, 1926, to Percy A. and Francis (Bergerson) Cook. She was born and baptized in Orrock, Minnesota. She was confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Myrtle, Minnesota. She attended high school in Austin. On Feb. 28, 1943, she married Leaon E. Broitzman.

Leaon and Helen farmed near Gordonsville, Minnesota, Albert Lea, Minnesota, and Northwood, Iowa. Helen was a cook for many years at the Northwood Retirement Home. In 1972, Helen and Leaon bought the “Anchorage,” a small fishing resort in Longville, Minnesota. Four years later they moved to Minneapolis and in 1985 they settled in Austin.

Helen was an active member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church. She loved her church and circle. She enjoyed playing cards at the Senior Center and the Moose Lodge. She also enjoyed going to Bingo and the casino. For many years, she was one of the “Lefsa Ladies.” She loved making baby quilts for family, friends and the foster children in Mower County.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters; three brothers; a great-granddaughter; and her fiancé of 10 years, Arnold Bergstrom.

Helen is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, JoAnn Charlson, Albert Lea, Bonnie Broitzman, Albert Lea, and Jacqueline and Harold Dietz; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Mary Ann Broitzman, Shevlin, Minnesota, Darold and Barbara Broitzman, Mankato, Minnesota; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brother, Larry (Pat) Avery, Wyoming, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 30, 2018, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mark Niethammer officiating. Visitation will be for one hour on Saturday before the service at the church. Interment will be at Wander’s Rest Cemetery, Gordonsville. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to St. Olaf Lutheran Church or to Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church.
