Kidanemariam Abraha Kidane, 34, of Austin was charged on Friday in Mower County District Court with felony second-degree assault with a deadly weapon and felony domestic assault by strangulation.
According to court documents, police were called at 4:48 a.m. on Wednesday to a residence in the 300 block of 14th Street Southeast. They spoke to a woman, via the language line, who said Kidane slapped her, hit her, threw something at her and strangled her after an argument. She then alleged that he threatened to strike her with a metal rod.
Police used the language line to speak to Kadine, who denied choking her, only grabbing the front of her shirt, according to the court documents. He allegedly admitted to slapping her and threatening her with the metal rod because he wanted to get information from her. He showed police the metal rod, which was 2 ½ feet long and had sharp edges on both sides. The woman identified it as the rod he threatened her with.
Kidane will appear in court again on June 28.
