Two juveniles were arrested on Tuesday night after allegedly attempting to steal a cell phone.
The Austin Police Department responded to a report of a robbery around 7:35 p.m. on the 200 block of 2nd Street SE. According to Chief Brian Krueger, the two suspects drove by a residence—one was 15 years old and the other 17 years old—when a group of three juveniles outside had allegedly name-called the two suspects.
The two suspects got out of the car and walked up to the three juveniles and confronted the group for the name calling. Krueger said that the 15-year-old suspect then saw an iPhone that was sitting on top of an outdoor table, took the phone, and stated that “this is my phone now.”
When one of the juveniles at the residence told the suspect that he couldn’t take the phone, the situation escalated. The 15-year-old suspect allegedly pulled out a knife and started waving it around while making threats toward the group. One of the juveniles then ran inside to get his dad, an unidentified 47-year-old man.
Krueger explained that the phone the suspect attempted to steal belonged to the father.
The man tried to hold the 15-year-old suspect to prevent him from leaving the premises while the police were contacted, when the man “felt something on his back.”
The 17-year-old suspect had pulled out a pink and black BB gun and shot the man twice in the back, enough where the pellets left marks and broke the skin, according to Krueger. The two suspects were found and arrested at the 200 block of 4th Street SE.
Police found a knife that the 15-year-old suspect allegedly used that was thrown in the grass.
The two suspects were then transported to Many Rivers Juvenile Detention Center in Rochester, and are currently being held there. The case was forwarded to the Mower County Attorney’s Office for review and for possible charges.
