Austin VFW loses DH to Rochester

The Austin Post 1216 VFW baseball team lost a pitcher’s dual and a slugfest in a doubleheader against the Rochester Rockets in Marcusen Park Saturday.

Rochester took the first game, a District contest, 1-0 and it won the second game, a non-district contest, 10-5.

Austin pitcher Teyghan Hovland struck out 15 in the first game for Austin (9-4 overall), but the Rockets were able to score a run in the top of the first when a runner advanced to first base on a wild pitch and JM eventually scored on a two-out double to right field.

Zach Bollingberg singled and Tanner Murphy each reached base to start the game for Post 1216, but Austin had just three runners on base for the rest of the game. Bollingberg and Murphy were stranded on second and third after Austin had three straight pop outs.

“We didn’t show up to compete,” Austin head coach Joe Ciola said. “If you’re not going to compete, you’re not going to win ball games. Pitching wasn’t the problem, mentally we didn’t approach our at bats the way we needed to.”

Austin led the second game 4-3 when the Rockets scored five runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead for good.

Post 1216 will wrap up its District regular season play when it plays at Rochester Century Monday. If Austin wins that game, it will likely host a Sub-District Tournament next weekend.
