Letter: Memorial for Cindy Howden

She had nicknames for everyone and everything. Mine was Duby. There was Queenie, Rocko, Duerst, Ceece and Jannie, plus Eleanor (her first car, after the middle name she despised). Her dad was always Glenn, our choir teacher, Lars. No one was called by their given name and that was okay. It was endearing, fun and our special bond. Even when we were 50 and in Nebraska for her second wedding, she still called me Duby.
Cindy Howden, my friend for over 43 years, passed away May 2, 2018. She was 59. We met at Austin High in ninth grade, where we quickly bonded over shared love for animals, singing and deep conversation.
Cindy was truly an old soul, a person that emanated truth, love and a fierce commitment to what she believed in. She is one of the strongest people I have ever known, and I am better for having known her.
Her determination for whatever she set her mind to was remarkable, whether it was singing in The Inspirations (seven girls in three-part harmonies!)/AHS Choir/ Austinaires, graduating from Iowa State in three years, or training race horses as her passion and job—everything she did was done with zest and an unfettered desire to work harder than anyone else. It was just her nature.
After a riding accident in 1988 that left her nearly paralyzed, Cindy was determined to be in my wedding. One year later, she walked down the aisle as one of my bridesmaids. Soon after, she returned to school for a master’s degree in social work. She worked as vocational counselor as her second career, and helped countless people reclaim their lives, just as she had.
Cindy’s main focus was always on others. She wanted to know how you were doing, what you were feeling, and if you remembered how special you are. She truly knew how to be a friend, and her caring, empathy and constant encouragement will never be forgotten.
There will be a memorial service for Cindy at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, at First United Methodist Church, 204 First Ave. NW.
Howdo, my forever friend, I will carry you always in my heart.
