Margaret Ann (Fossey) Meyer, 89, died on Aug. 25, 2018, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Center in St. Ansgar, Iowa, surrounded by members of her family.

Margaret was born Feb. 21, 1929, the second child of Mense and Amy (Rustad) Fossey, in Otranto Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, where she lived most of her life.

Margaret graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1946 and attended college at Austin Junior College, Austin, Minnesota, and at Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, Iowa.

In the fall of 1949, she became the first kindergarten teacher in St. Ansgar where she taught until May, 1952. In June, 1952, Margaret married Loren Meyer. In May, 1953, the couple bought and moved to a 40-acre farm one mile south and west of Mona, IA, which was their home for the next 65 years.

Margaret devoted much of her life to being a wife and mother, a grandmother and great-grandmother, as well as a surrogate mom and grandma to children of all ages. An active, life-long member of Mona Lutheran Church, she taught Sunday School for almost 50 years and served as Sunday School Superintendent, a WELCA officer, on the Board of Education, a delegate to numerous ELCA assemblies, and a Luther League sponsor. She was a godparent to eight children and offered parental care and guidance to many more.

Margaret is survived by her husband of 66 years, Loren, and their children, Sue Horgen, St. Ansgar, Kurt (Paula) Meyer, St. Ansgar, Mark (Ann) Meyer, Cedar Falls, Rod (Kendall) Meyer, Mankato, Minnesota, Lowell (Margaret) Meyer, Mendota Heights, Minnesota and Rev. Scott (Tracy) Meyer, Waseca, Minnesota. She is also survived by her sister, Norma (Emery) Price, Lyle, Minnesota; her brother, Allen Fossey, Preston, Minnesota; and her sisters-in-law, Joan Fossey, St. Ansgar; Marilyn Murphy, Sacramento, California; and Carolyn (Michael) Gautschi, Andover, Minnesota. Margaret’s passing is mourned by 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren as well as by numerous nieces and nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.

A service of Christian burial and celebration of Margaret’s life will be held at Mona Lutheran Church in Mona, Iowa at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8. The family asks that memorial gifts be made to Mona Lutheran Church.
