Robert “Doc” Lommen, 94, formerly of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Friday, Sept. 7, 2018, surrounded by his loving family, at Walker Methodist-Westwood Ridge Assisted Living Facility in West St. Paul, Minnesota.
Robert Henry Lommen was born April 6, 1924, in Austin to Dr. Peter and Corena (Henry) Lommen. He attended Austin Public Schools, graduating from Austin High School in 1942. Robert “Doc” enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, serving during the invasion of the Philippines. He received his honorable discharge in 1946, having earned the rank of sergeant. Robert began his college studies at St. Olaf College in 1946, graduating with a degree in economics in 1949. He worked for Hormel Foods Corporation as a military sales manager, retiring after 37 years of service to the company. During his career selling Hormel products, Robert visited almost all 50 states. On Aug. 9, 1952, he was united in marriage to Jean Conroy in Chicago, Illinois. Together the couple raised four children. A lifelong Austin resident, ‘Doc’ belonged to St. Olaf Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed. He enjoyed watching and participating in sports, especially golf. Other favorite pastimes included meticulous lawn care and traveling. He visited the Far East, Hawaii, and took several cruises. Doc was a scoutmaster, belonged to the American Legion and, most importantly, was a devoted family man. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Lommen; his children, Debbie (Randy) Day of Burnsville, Minnesota, Scott (Melody) Lommen of Richfield, Minnesota, and Holly (Tom) Kelly of Buffalo, Minnesota; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen (Jack) Moors of Lincoln, Nebraska; a brother, Dean (Louise) Lommen of Florida; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, David, in 2014; and two brothers, Peter and Morris Lommen.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018, at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin. Visitation will be held one hour before the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Military rites will be by American Legion Post 91. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
