A full fall of fun awaiting families

What will you make? Fall is full of art-making opportunities at the Austin ArtWorks Center.
Kids, ages 4-14, are invited to $5 Kids Studio, every Saturday at 10:30 a.m. See austinareaarts.org for weekly project details and to register. Advance registration is recommended as these sessions often sell out. Kids’ Studio classes are made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a SEMAC grant.
On Saturday, Oct. 27, Kids Studio is cancelled and is replaced by a free pumpkin craft as part of Fall Fest with support from Vision 2020. Drop in between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to make your own pumpkin creation.
Drop in as a family and get creative with the materials provided at Family Art Studios on Saturday, Oct. 13, and Saturday, Nov. 10 from 1 to 3 p.m. The event is free thanks to a grant by Austin Area Foundation. All ages are encouraged to attend and create together — children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
Master teacher Steve DeLaitsch is teaching two classes in October: Essential Watercolor Techniques at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, and On-site Watercolor Class at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20. Those who have seen DeLaitsch’s work at the Austin ArtWorks Center or Austin Artworks Festival remember his powerful midwestern landscapes. These classes are appropriate for beginners, intermediate or advanced students.
If a camera is your art weapon of choice, consider Portrait Photography with Hannah Rosholt. This is a two-part class on Wednesday, Oct. 17, and Wednesday, Oct. 24, at 5 p.m. Find out about what makes a great portrait and how to pose your subject. Expect to learn through assignments and peer critiques.
One of our most popular retail artists, Katie Stromlund, will teach Fall Pumpkin: An Acrylic Painting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20. All skill levels are welcome. Class is geared towards adults, but will accept all ages over sixth grade.
Using precious metal clay, clay composed of silver particles, water and an organic binder, you can create a Ring in a Day at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10. Instructors Kim Bakken-Parr and Lee Parr will lead students through the one-day jewelry making process. There is no hammering, sawing or soldering. The final rings are all 99.9 percent pure silver and called “fine silver.”
See what the bullet journaling trend on Pinterest is all about with Kelly Gau Studio’s class Creative Journaling at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30. Learn simple techniques and play with fun supplies to begin on your journey of journaling. Expect fun, relaxation, no pressure and a good time for all ages — making it a great option for parent-child, grandparent-grandchild or other family combinations.
Join instructor John Sullivan in the clay cavern for Basic Wheel Throwing, a two-session class on Thursday, Dec. 6, and Thursday, Dec. 13, at 5:30 p.m.
Remember, classes are added to the schedule throughout the season. For the latest, visit austinareaarts.org or sign up for our email newsletter.
Fall classes are a great place to create art for the 2018 Austin Area Arts Members Only Gallery Show. Any Austin Area Arts member is invited to exhibit and sell your artwork in the show which opens on Friday, Nov. 23, and runs through Jan. 5, 2019. The show, will be celebrated at a Gallery Opening from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 23, as part of Austin’s Christmas in the City celebration.
