Roman E. Steichen, 86 of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Monday, Oct. 22, 2018, at Homestead of Rochester in Rochester, Minnesota.

Roman was born Sept. 20, 1932, in Austin to Andrew and Hanna (Bottema) Steichen. He grew up in Adams, Minnesota, and attended high school there. On Oct. 4, 1958, Roman was united in marriage to Margaret Cooper at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Rochester. The couple raised their family and lived their entire married life in Austin. Roman was employed with Hormel Foods in Austin. He was a longtime time member of the St. Augustine Catholic Church and also volunteered for more than 15 years at Sacred Heart Hospice in Austin.

Roman is survived by his sons, Raymond (Marie) Steichen of Spring Valley, Minnesota, Dan (Sandra) Steichen of Lakeland, Minnesota, Mike (Dana) Steichen of Austin, Minnesota, and Joseph (Charisse) Steichen of Austin, Texas; daughters, Bawn (Sean) Kazos of Maplewood, Minnesota, and Theresa Steichen and Deon Williams of Blaine, Minnesota; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; siblings, Donald Steichen of Orange City, California, Fr. Ray Steichen of Apple Valley, California, Margaret (Ted) Brush of Seattle, Washington, Tom (MaryAnn) Pequot Lakes, Minnesota, David (Carol) Steichen of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mary (Dick) Thamert of Owatonna, Minnesota, and Jim (Tina) Orange County, California. Roman was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Hanna Steichen; his loving wife, Margaret Steichen; sister, Ramona Urrutia; brother, Robert Steichen; and grandson, Kevin Dammen.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin. Visitation will be held on Friday, Oct. 26, 2018, from 5-8 p.m. at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and will continue on for one hour prior to Mass on Saturday at the church. There will be a parish Rosary service at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Austin. Memorials in Roman’s memory may be directed to Friends of the JC Hormel Nature Center – Kevin Dammen Memorial Mentorship Program.
