After the polls closed and the ballots were counted, the results of the Austin School Board race showed that the four incumbents up for re-election will serve another term.
One of the more competitive races during Tuesday’s elections, Angie Goetz, Peggy Young, Kathy Green and Don Fox all maintained their seats despite running against three challengers. With the incumbents securing 18.07 percent, 18.12 percent, 19.13 percent, and 16.7 percent of the votes respectively.
Angie Goetz
“I’m really honored to serve Austin Public Schools for another term,” Goetz said over the phone on Wednesday morning.
Moving forward Goetz, who currently serves as the school board chairwoman, wanted to focus on furthering to close the achievement gap within the APS district, as well as trying to find a new home for the community learning center that’s currently housed at the Queen of Angels.
Kathy Green
Green stated that she was happy with the election results and that she was “looking forward to continuing my work with the school board.”
“Austin has some really exciting things happening in the future,” she said. “We’re in a great place right now. I’m excited with the work we’re doing.”
For Green, those things include the launch of the Austin Assurance Scholarship Program and the innovation from educators districtwide. She shared that with teachers being given the opportunity to be innovative, that the overall direction APS was headed was toward a brighter future.
Also speaking of elections, Green wanted to emphasize that she was “encouraged” by the number of candidates who ran in this year’s school board race.
“We had some really spectacular candidates,” she said. “I wish the best to all those who stepped forward and for them to continue being involved and excited about what we’re doing in Austin Public Schools. There’s many areas where people can volunteer and bring forth their ideas, and I want to be supportive of that.”
Don Fox
Long time school board member Don Fox also maintained his position on the Austin School Board.
“I’ve been on the board for quite some time, and it really got me excited,” Fox said. “Teachers make a difference and we got a great staff.”
Fox credited several people for helping shape the district during his tenure with the school board, including: Dick Lees, Curt Rude, and Diane Wangness in handling “difficult school matters.” One of which included the search for a new superintendent about two terms ago, which eventually resulted in the hiring of current Superintendent David Krenz.
“Since then, we’ve had people helping with all of this and the district has been running very smoothly,” Fox said. “Our students are very fortunate because of the great teaching staff. To still be on the board after all this time is a pleasure to me. David Krenz has been excellent with his job as school superintendent, and the teachers are extremely good at getting things done.”
