Donald Anhorn, 91

The Lord Jesus, in His infinite wisdom, power and love called Donald Anhorn to Himself in everlasting glory on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018, at St Francis Hospital in Shakopee, Minnesota. Don’s earthly journey was 91 years, 4 months, 27 days.

Donald Anhorn was born on July 3, 1927, in Austin, Minnesota, the son of Arthur and Mildred (Bergland) Anhorn and oldest of five children. He was baptized into the Kingdom of God on Sept. 4, 1927, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church by the Rev. Henry Noss and confirmed in the Christian faith.

Don attended Austin public schools and graduated top male in his class of 1945. Sports were a large part of his high school years. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in May 1945 to become a V5 fighter pilot, but the program was already filled. Don was placed in the radar tech program. The war ended in August, just as he was scheduled to be on a carrier for the invasion of Japan on Oct. 14, 1945. Don was released from the Navy in August 1946 and started Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, that fall.

He was diagnosed with tuberculosis in the spring of 1948 and entered Mineral Springs Sanitorium in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, that June, where he stayed until March 1951. Seeking a drier climate, he continued his education at the University of Arizona, receiving his bachelor of arts degree in philosophy and a minor in mathematics. Following his graduation, he spent ten months in Europe until the spring of 1955. He did graduate study at the University of California and was a teaching assistant in philosophy.

He taught mathematics at Oakland City College and Vallejo Junior College in California from 1958 to 1960. He left teaching and became a computer programmer at the University of California radiation lab in 1960. Work continued at Lockheed, Stanford University, RCA, and the State of California. He retired in June 1985.

In 1955, Don married fellow student Sumiko Ikeda while he was a teaching assistant. They had three sons, Jeffrey, Derek and Stuart, and they lived in Palo Alto, California for thirty years. They were active in civic affairs and the 50+ Fitness Association. Don took up running at age 57 and enjoyed the competition in both distance and sprints. He enjoyed bee keeping as a hobby.

Running in the WAVA World Games in Eugene, Oregon, in 1989 precipitated a move to that city in 1993. Don served on the board of the Oregon Track Club Masters and was the Eugene Ambassador for 50+. His running and racing career ended in 2006 at the age of 79 due to back problems. Their greatest delight was then caring for their granddaughter, Tianna.

Don moved to Northfield, Minnesota, in August 2013 after the death of his wife, Sumy. He lived in the Village on the Cannon.

Don will be remembered always by his son, Derek (Ruthann) Anhorn; granddaughter, Tianna (Kenneth) Banfield; sister, Janet (Richard) Gaughran; brother, Ronald Anhorn; brother-in-law, Dr. Duane Napp; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Gladys Ikeda, Noby and Susie Ikeda and Margaret and Ryo Kono; and many nephews, nieces and friends.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Sumy; infant son, Jeffrey; son, Stuart; parents; brother, Robert (Audrey) Anhorn; and sister, Arlene Napp.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018, at the Benson and Langehough Funeral Home in Northfield. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Crane Creek Cemetery, also known as the Anhorn/Hoffman Family Cemetery, in Owatonna, Minnesota.
