Florence E. Schmit, 68, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Monday, Nov. 5, 2018, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin.

Florence Elizabeth Wiste was born June 3, 1950, in Austin, the daughter of Henry and Edna (Bjertness) Wiste. She graduated with the Spring Grove High School Class of 1968. On May 9, 1970, Florence was united in marriage to James Schmit in Mabel, Minnesota. Together the couple raised two sons. After their marriage, Florence and Jim moved to Rose Creek, Minnesota, and then to Austin in the year 2000. For several years, Florence worked as a nurse’s aide at the Adams Health Care Center. She enjoyed crafts, crocheting, and was an excellent cook. She especially treasured her family and was overjoyed by the birth of her great-granddaughter. Her family and friends will miss her dearly.

Survivors include her husband, Jim Schmit of Austin; her sons, Jamey (Mindy) Schmit and Daryn Schmit, both of Austin; her three grandchildren, Logan (Lexi), Lawson and Brady; her great-granddaughter, Joslee; two brothers, Truman Wiste and Larry (Sharon) Wiste, both of Spring Grove, Minnesota; two sisters, Helen (Darrel) Mann of Sheridan, Wyoming, and Carol (Merlin) Melver of Buffalo, Wyoming; sisters-in-law, Janice Bartley of Hillsboro, North Carolina, Carolyn Tindal of Mapleview, Minnesota, and Joyce (Craig) Lerum of Fairmont, Minnesota; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jack (Pam) Schmit of Austin and Mark (Margaret) Schmit of Rose Creek; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Florence was preceded in death by her parents; brothers-in-law, David Bartley and Cliff Tindal; and sister-in-law, Joanne Rhine.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018, at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin with Pastor Shari Mason officiating. There will be a visitation from 10-11:30 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Rose Creek.
