Candidate Joyce Poshusta was declared the winner in the Third Ward council race after the last precinct votes were finished being counted after 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
The Third Ward race was the closest of the four council races, with Poshusta defeating opponent Brian Heimer by 161 votes. She will be taking over from Councilwoman Judy Enright, who opted not to seek another term.
“I am truly humbled by all of the support I’ve received and am honored to be elected to serve the citizens of Austin,” she told the Herald. “I will do my best to make sure that they are heard and that issues get resolved.”
Poshusta spoke highly of Heimer, calling him “a class act with a lot to offer the community.” She acknowledged the closeness of the race, saying it is “proof that voting matters.”
Poshusta currently manages the Twin Towers and said she plans to address the housing issue, particularly extending the tax abatement as a means to incentivize developers and take a look at homelessness in Austin.
“It’s an exciting time in Austin and I believe that we will see quite a bit of growth over the next few years,” she said. “I welcome and encourage comments and suggestions.”
