Sandvik wins bid for Mower County Sheriff, some new faces in local race

With Mower County results not coming in until well into the early morning hours Wednesday, voters are waking up to some new faces in its local government.
Voters picked Steven Sandvik as their next Mower County Sheriff. Sandvik defeated challenger John Bachman with over 61 percent of the vote. He will succeed current Sheriff Terese Amazi.
In one of the Mower County Commission races, Jeff Baldus unseated incumbent Tony Bennett for the District 4 seat with 55.58 percent of the vote while Jerry Reinartz retained his seat in District 3 with 64.17 percent of the vote.
Scott Felten defeated Steven Reinartz in the auditor-treasurer race with 60.85 percent of the vote.
In the city races, Jeff Austin will be the new at-large member of the Austin City Commission, defeating Susan Fell Johnson with 58 percent of the vote. Rebecca Waller was elected to the Ward 1 seat with 58 percent and Joyce Poshusta was the winner in Ward 3 with just under 52 percent.
Jason Baskin won Ward 2, running unopposed.
Statewide, Rep. Jeanne Poppe will continue to serve District 27B, defeating challenger Christine Green with over 57 percent and Jim Hagedorn holds a slim lead over Dan Feehan in a battle for the District 1 U.S. Congressional seat with a hair over 50 percent of the vote.
Kathy Green, Peggy Young, Angie Goetz and Don Fox were all re-elected to the Austin School Board and in the county both the referendums on the ballot in Southland and another in LeRoy-Ostrander passed.
