Mike was born March 3, 1953, in Adams, Minnesota, to Robert and Bernice (Foster) Mead. He graduated from Elkton High School in 1971. Mike married Françoise Berney in 2003 and they later divorced.

Mike was a small town farm kid from Elkton, but followed his dreams and never lost his love for life. He loved the outdoors, where he liked to hunt, fish and garden. He was an avid reader and wood worker. He liked to go to antique stores and garage sales and was a collector of old stuff. He loved to travel and enjoyed skiing in Austria and Colorado. Mike loved his family and was always there to lend a helping hand. He was a mentor to all, sharing his knowledge about his job, hunting and how to work on things around the house. He adored his dogs Mickey, Izzy and Millie.
