Packer gymnasts top Red Wing

Austin senior Sam Sheldon was right in friendly confines against the Wingers — literally and figuratively — on Thursday.
The Packers were competing on their home venue in the Austin YMCA and Sheldon saw plenty of old friends on the Wingers, who Austin beat by a score of 129.925-125.825.
Sheldon trained with many of the Red Wing athletes over the summer and she spent a good deal of time taking photos and reacquainting herself with her workout friends.
“I know a lot gymnasts from a lot of the schools in the Big Nine,” Sheldon said. “I think it’s super cool. It’s not so much like a competition, it’s more like friends having fun. I’m really glad we’re friends.”
Sheldon led the Packers as she finished first in the all-around, first in bars, first in beam, second in floor and second in vault. Sheldon’s all-around score was a 34.075 and she’s hoping to continue improve on that mark.
“I definitely need to improve, which is nice because winter break is coming up and that’s when we generally train,” Sheldon said. “We’ll have a lot of hours in the gym to learn new skills. I’m looking forward to winter break and working on new things. I’m not where I want to be yet, but I will be.”
Morgan Raymond took fourth in the all-around for Austin.
