AHS set to induct new Hall of Fame Class

The 34th annual Austin High School Hall of Fame Weekend is set for Jan. 25 and 26. The induction ceremony will take place at halftime of the boys basketball game against Winona on Jan. 25.
The year’s Hall of fame class includes: Kal Kallenberger, class of 1973, Dave Wagner, class of 1973, Lisa Johnson Stout, class of 1980, Dwayne “Dewey” Hagan, class of 1982, Amy Kelly Bissen, class of 2003 and Bill Lloyd, Coach.
Hall of Fame activities continue on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with a social gathering open to the public and the media in the AHS Commons. This is an opportunity to enjoy free coffee, juice and doughnuts while meeting and greeting the inductees and attending Hall of Fame members.
Hall of Fame Weekend concludes with the Saturday luncheon in the Fellowship Hall at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, 306 2nd St. NW. The public are invited to attend. The luncheon begins at 12:30 p.m.
Kal Kallenberger, class of 1973
Kallenberger ended his football career at AHS as the career passing leader. He was the Big Nine passing leader and an All-Conference selection in 1972-73. Minneapolis radio station WCCO named Kallenberger to its mythical All-State that same year.
Kallenberger made the All-Conference second team for basketball and he had a big run at state, where the Packers finished second. Kallenberger was the tournament scoring champ, second leading rebounder and selected to the All-State Tournament team. Kallenberger led the Big Nine in scoring and made the All-Conference first team his senior year. Both the Minneapolis Tribune and WCCO named Kallenberger to their All-State teams. Kallenberger was also a Letterman Magazine All-American team selection.
In 1973, Kallenberger participated in 14 different events in track and field and he was the team’s leading scorer. Although recruited by several colleges as a decathlete, Kallenberger played football at Minnesota State-Mankato, where he was a two-year starter. Kallenberger had the highest Division II passer rating in 1977 and he was third in passing yards.
Kallenberger has five children. He lives in Kingswood, Texas today with his wife Dianne. He retired in 2016 after teaching 35 years and coaching 22.
Dave Wagner, class of 1973
Wagner started at center for the 1972-73 basketball team but he displayed even greater talent on the gridiron, where he played special teams, offense and defense. As defensive end, Wagner was the team’s sack leader with 4. On offense, he led the Packers with 223 receiving yards and scored two TDs. Wagner was named All-Conference offensive end in 1972.
Wagner was awarded a full football scholarship to the University of Iowa. He was one of only two freshmen to make the defensive squad. He played in 33 games on special teams, started 12 as defensive quick end and earned three letters.
Wagner earned a BBA degree from Iowa with a major in Industrial Relations. He sold dictation application software and hardware before owning and operating his own business, Advanced Voice Systems Inc. He has a daughter and lives in Chaska.
Lisa Johnson Stout, class of 1980
Stout played basketball and softball, earning six letters.
Stout excelled at third base for the softball team and she was a member of the Packer teams that won the Big 9, the region and made three State appearances from 1977-1980. The Packers won it all in 1980.
Stout was a strong hitter with .520 career batting average. She set team records in game assists and career assists as well.
Stout lives in Austin today. She and husband Brad have two children.
Dwayne “Dewey” Hagan, class of 1982
Hagan wrestled and played football, where he played offensive guard, nose guard and special teams.
Haganwas a big reason for the Packer’s success against the run and was the team’s 1981 most valuable defensive player and a 1982 All-Conference honoree. Hagan was named Player of the Week by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, WCCO and KAUS. He was named to the 1982 Outstate All-Star Football Team.
Hagan continued his football career at Austin Community College and Winona State. He was team captain at ACC his sophomore year and named All Conference honorable mention.
Hagan has taught in the Austin Public School System 31 years and coached football and wrestling. He lives in Austin today with his wife Mary. They have four children.
Amy Kelly Bissen, class of 2003
Amy played tennis, basketball and softball earning 12 letters. She had winning records at No. 2 and No. 1 singles over her four-year tennis career. She was a four-time All-Conference selection and 2002 Big 9 singles champ. Bissen teamed with Laurie Alonso her junior and senior years to play doubles. The duo won the 2000 State Tournament title and were state runners-up in 2001. Bissen was ranked at No. 10 singles in State Class AA her senior year.
Bissen garnered All-Conference honorable mention and All-Conference recognition for her play on the hardwood. She scored 700 career points, averaging 11.8 points per game her senior year. She was also named to the All-State Honorable mention team
Bissen racked up team and career bests in numerous statistical categories in softball as she had a career ERA of 0.55. Bissen led the Packers to Big 9 Conference titles, Section titles and State Tournament appearances. She was a four-time All-Conference selection, All- Section, All-State and was selected to the Minnesota State All-Star Team. Bissen was the Austin Daily Herald All-Area 2003 Softball Player of the Year.
Bissen received numerous academic honors as she was a high distinction graduate with a 4.0 GPA. Bissen played Division II softball for the University of Minnesota, Duluth before transferring to Minnesota State University-Mankato.
She is currently a Human Resources Professional for Federated in Owatonna where she lives with her husband Ray. They have four children.
Bill Lloyd, coach
Lloyd had a distinguished 35-year career, coaching ninth grade football and basketball, junior high track and golf. He served as assistant B squad football, head B squad basketball, assistant varsity football, head varsity girl’s golf and head varsity basketball coach.
In his 14 years as head B squad basketball coach, Lloyd compiled a 203-51 record and won the Big 9 Conference title ten times. As an assistant varsity football coach, he helped the Pickers win or share three Conference championships. Under Lloyd’s guidance, the girls’ golf team reached the finals of the Section tournament. His 1987-88 varsity girls basketball team was the Big 9 Conference Co-Champions and Lloyd was the 1988 Big 9 Coach of the Year and 1988 Region IAA Coach of the Year.
Lloyd retired from teaching and coaching in 1997. He is deceased and survived by his wife Judy and four sons.
