After a January with above average temperatures, Mower County will be seeing snow and low temperatures this weekend.
The National Weather Service in La Crosse on Thursday issued a Winter Storm Warning for Mower County in effect from noon on Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday.
According to National Weather Service Meteorologist Nicole Batzek, a snow system to the south is projected to drop 4-6 inches of snow in the Austin area; however, that total could be higher or lower due to a sharp snow gradient.
As a result, travel on Friday afternoon and evening will be impacted with slick roads and reduced visibility from blowing snow. If travel is necessary, the NWS advises that travelers keep an extra flashlight, food and water in their vehicles.
Saturday and Sunday will see colder temperatures, with highs in the mid-teens and lows in the single digits, according to Batzek. Temperatures as low as zero degrees are possible.
The cold will continue into Monday, with wind chill ranging from -5 to -15 degrees. Batzek warned that frostbite could result without proper protection.
