Robert Atle Hyland Sr., 85, of rural Austin, Minnesota, passed away at his home on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019.
Robert was born April 25, 1933, in Austin to Jens and Esther (Smith) Hyland. He served in the U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne Division during the Korean Conflict and was proud to have earned his “Senior Wings.” On April 8, 1956, Bob married Irene Bly at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. He worked as a master mechanic for Weyerhaeuser, retiring in 1988.
He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and the Austin American Legion Post 91. Bob enjoyed baseball, football, deer hunting, mechanic work, horses, farming and riding his John Deere lawnmower. Bob believed in giving back. He was proud of “giving back” by donating to over 32 gallons of blood to the Red Cross, a practice he began during his military duty.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Milo and Myron and an infant brother; and brothers-in-law, Arleigh Anthonisen and Vernon Vold.
Bob is survived by his wife of 62 years, Irene Hyland of Austin; children, Robert (Karen) Hyland Jr. of Dexter, Minnesota, Della (Kevin) Whalen of LeRoy, Minnesota, Roger (Toni) Hyland of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, Kathy Hyland of Austin, Theresa Hyland (John Lucking) of Isle, Minnesota, and LuAnn (Jacob) Hyland-Albee of Marshall, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren, Erik (Casey) Hyland of Rochester, Minnesota, David Whalen of Rochester, Patrick (Angela) Whalen of Austin, Joshua Whalen of LeRoy, Phillip Whalen of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Jake Hyland of Blooming Prairie, Jackie Hyland of Blooming Prairie, Tia Hyland of Brainerd, Minnesota, Hunter Hyland-Lucking of Isle, Alexandre Hyland of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Oliver Albee of Marshall; great grandchildren, Adeline Hyland of Rochester and Kaylin, Kane and Killian Whalen of Austin; sisters, Betty Vold of Lake Mills, Iowa, and Esther Anthonisen of Austin; sisters-in-law, Helen Hyland of Austin and Ernestine Hyland of Florida; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, 2019, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mark Niethammer officiating. Austin American Legion Post 91 and Olaf B. Damm VFW Post 1216 are in charge of military honors. Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019, at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and for one hour before the service on Monday at the church. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery.
