Myrtle L. Schleusner, 97, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, at St. Mark’s Living of Austin.

Myrtle Lillian was born on Jan. 4, 1922, to August and Clara (Engelmeier) Maas in Walnut Grove, Minnesota. Myrtle was baptized and confirmed at the rural Johnsonville Trinity Lutheran Church. In 1940, Myrtle graduated from high school in Walnut Grove. She later went on to become an LPN.

Myrtle came to Austin to work at St. Olaf Hospital (now known as Mayo Clinic Health System-Austin), in September of 1945. She worked many years as an LPN. Before coming to Austin, she also worked at Marshall, Minnesota, Heron Lake, Minnesota, and Mankato, Minnesota.

In Austin, she met Dennis J Schleusner. They were married on June 23, 1951, at the Johnsonville Trinity Lutheran Church. Dennis passed away in 2005. They were married 54 wonderful years. To this union three children were born: Pamela Hacker of Fargo, North Dakota, John (Karen) Schleusner of Austin, and James Schleusner of Brighton, Missouri. She also had nine grandchildren, Jacob Regnier, Jed (Jenny) Regnier, Jamie (Peter) Zotalis, Janine (Jason) Goenner, Hannah Schleusner, Marissa Schleusner, Lindsay Borg, Ryan (Sarah) Schleusner and Kelsea (Rob) Stueve. Myrtle was additionally blessed with 15 great-grandchildren.

Myrtle had been a member of Grace Lutheran Church since 1951. She was also a member of WELCA, Church Circle, Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, VFW Ladies Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary. She also enjoyed being a member and playing cards with card groups. Myrtle was a Cub Scout den mother when her son, Jim, was a Cub Scout and a Brownie leader, when daughter, Pam, was in Girl Scouts.

Myrtle’s greatest joys were cooking big meals for her family and friends along with being together with them. She enjoyed watching television game shows, reading, and playing 500.

Survivors include her children; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; brother, Ernest (Eldora) Maas of Walnut Grove; sister-in-law, Margaret Schleusner of Garner, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Schleusner; parents, August and Clara Maas; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ella (Aymer) Axtelle and Esther (Norman) Gatzlaff; brother, Paul Maas; sisters-in law, Doris (Maas) Grinde and Vern Grinde; niece, Beverly (Axtelle) Carlson; nephew, Chuck Maas; and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2019, at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery in Austin. Memorials can be directed to the American Cancer Society.
