College students interested in research or health sciences careers are encouraged to apply for this year’s Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) internship program at The Hormel Institute, University of Minnesota.

All application materials must be completed no later than March 1 to be considered for the SURE internship. Applicants are required to complete an application form and submit a resume, college transcript, and two letters of recommendation.

The SURE internship is a 10 week, paid internship that gives undergraduate students the opportunity to work in one of The Hormel Institute’s 16 cancer research sections. Interns work on research projects to expand their knowledge of basic research as well as learn about equipment and techniques generally unavailable in undergraduate academic programs.

The 2019 program will run from June 3  to Aug. 9.

Interns are selected based on their high level of academic achievements and plans to pursue careers in science or medically related fields. A priority is placed on applicants who are majoring in a science-related field and who will be entering their junior or senior year following the internship.

Students who will be sophomores next fall and those with a medical or research related major are also encouraged to apply.

“The knowledge I gained, the opportunity to collaborate with professionals, and the tasks that I performed gave me an excellent view into the challenges and the day to day life in a lab, said 2018 SURE intern Noah Johnson. “The experience brought science to life in a way that isn’t possible from a university class or lab and provided me with a window into the requirements necessary to pursue my professional aspirations.”
