The Wide Angle: Spring shows off the mess I knew I had

It’s spring and I think we can all feel pretty comfortable in saying that now, not only because the calendar tells us this, but weather is telling us as well.
Pleasant temperatures have us getting outside and doing a variety of things that winter prevented us from doing for so long, which is probably measured in centuries. Or so it seemed.
One of those things that winter prevents us from doing is spring cleaning, which for me is double the difficulty because I’m horrible at cleaning anyway.
If you want a peek into the cleanliness of my life, simply observe my desk the next time you’re in the office. I understand this is a problem each time I’m at home as well. Each time I pass the same hoodie that hasn’t changed spots in days. I’m like a teeneager in some ways. A 45-year-old teenager.
I’m not entirely sure there is anybody who generally likes cleaning. Heck, I get angry when I have to clean my glasses, which get dirty every hour. And why do spots seem to solidify after just a few seconds that normally can be wiped off anything else? I don’t mean to get philosophical here, but are we all just spots on glasses?
Whoa.
The cleaning aspect of spring struck home after enjoying some time thinking and planning my garden. I was looking at the now visible patch of fertile, exposed earth, optimistically plotting where each plant would go and where the inevitable disaster would end up.
After feeling good about the progression of my plans, I opened up the garage to retrieve my bike so I could go back to work.
As the door was opening, it suddenly occurred to me that it was like opening the door to one of Egypt’s pyramids. Secrets of the past lay at my disposable, except in this moment, secrets of the past resembled a garage full of artifacts I bought just last year.
Even though one doesn’t normally spend a lot of time in their garage relative to how we spend the rest of our time, it is a place we spend a decent chunk of life during the spring, summer and fall, so ideally I think we would like a clean environment.
If my garage is any indication, we’re all frowning at the amount of clutter and sand and junk throughout. My floor resembles a sandbox more than cement floor, and everything else is pushed together in order to make it easier to drag the monster of a snowblower around, pushing it in and out of the garage in order to assault the snowfall in my driveway.
I would like to say I have a certain order to how I move things around to ensure things are easier to gain access to, like a truly grown and responsible adult, but that would be a bold faced lie, and just so I don’t have people jumping on the bandwagon of calling the media fake, I will tell you the bold-faced truth.
I put things where I have room for them, which often times leads to mass tangle of snowblowers, lawnmowers, bikes and various other things that I’ve stowed in the garage because I have no room in the basement. Or, more to the point, I’m too lazy to take to the basement.
Either way, we all have our faults and mine, well mine are really starting to pile up. There’s probably an analogy in there somewhere about my life, but like my desire to keep things orderly, I’m too lazy to do anything meaningful about it.
All of this is particularly ironic considering that at work if somebody doesn’t put a photo where I want it organized, there is usually a profound moment of disappointment.
So how does one not simply utilize this disappointment in unruly things at home? Well that, dear reaer No. 22, is part of the problem and really feeds into the continued laziness of fixing a problem. I should fix the garage mess issue just like I should correct the issue of wanting to correct the garage issue, which got me writing this in the first place.
I know, it’s a vicious circle. Or just confusing following my logic. I wouldn’t fault you either way you look at it.
I’m complicated and maybe a little bit intriguing, probably ending in you asking the question, “How did he even get out of second grade?”
All of this does nothing to change the fact that I really do have a problem of a messy garage and I really should do something about it, so I’m hoping spring re-energizes me and kicks me into gear to get something done.
Supposing I have the actual will to find that thing, which is probably buried under a mountain of other ideas I should be pursuing.
Eh, I’ll get to it later. I’m in the middle of some pretty serious procrastinating.
