Cameron Krueger is a senior on the Austin boys tennis team.
Q: What sports do you compete in?
A: Football, swimming, and tennis.
Q: How did you originally get into tennis?
A: My parents like to play and I played with them when I was younger. After a couple years of not playing I joined the high school team in eighth grade.
Q: What’s your favorite sports memory?
A: My favorite sports memory is going to state swimming this year. My favorite tennis memory is getting matching supreme headbands while playing doubles with Nico (Forte) last year.
Q: What have you learned from sports?
A: Natural ability can only get you so far in life, at some point you have to start putting in work to get better at whatever you’re doing.
Q: What is the hardest part about sports?
A: The hardest part of sports is to put in work during the off-season. You can only grow so much during a season, but if you practice during the off-season, you’re going improve so much more.
Q: How do you keep your focus when competing?
A: Each sport has a different mentality. For football it was more of a “I want to destroy this guy across from me and I’m going to run him over.” For swimming, you really just have to get in the zone and try to beat yourself. Tennis is so much a mental game. It’s easy to stay focused when you’re winning, but when you’re down it gets a lot harder. I try to tell myself that it’s just a game and that you just have to play every point the best you can, one point at a time.
Q: Who is your biggest sports role model and why?
A: I don’t pay that much attention to many sports but I’d have to say Michael Phelps. His body was made to be a swimmer, but he still practices as hard as he can every single day and it really shows.
Q: What is your favorite movie or TV show?
A: “NCIS.” I love watching the show trying to figure out who did it before you actually know what happened.
Q: What is your favorite subject in school?
A: Math, it’s always just clicked for me.
Q: What is your dream job?
A: Even though I haven’t done a play in a long time I still love doing them. I wish I could be an actor, but I know the odds of making it in Hollywood is super hard.
Q: What is your favorite food?
A: French fries.
Q: What are your plans after high school?
A: I’m going to go to Riverland for a year, and then I’m going to go to either the University of Nebraska in Lincoln or Iowa State for civil engineering.
Q: What’s a fun fact about you or hobby you enjoy most people don’t know about?
A: I am a boy scout and I recently earned my eagle scout badge. It’s a lot of extra work on top of school and sports, but it has been a great experience.
Q: If you could have one super power, what would it be?
A: I think having telekinesis would be pretty cool. You could freak some people out by moving random things with your mind.
